The IACUC at Michigan State University is managed in compliance with USDA regulations (9 CFR Parts 1, 2, & 3), the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching. To meet this obligation, the MSU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) reviews and monitors all activities involving live vertebrate animals, conducts semiannual reviews of its animal care and use program, and submits reports of the evaluations to the Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies (OVPRGS).
Michigan State University is registered with the United States Department of Agriculture and has an approved Animal Welfare Assurance from the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW). In addition, all components of the University are accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC).
J. Ian Gray, PhD., Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, is the Institutional Official. For day-to-day operations, the program is guided by Joseph R. Haywood, PhD., the Assistant Vice President for Regulatory Affairs. The IACUC is appointed by the President of Michigan State University.
The IACUC generally meets monthly for a half day to review protocols and discuss other issues brought before the committee. Committee responsibilities are those prescribed by the USDA and NIH requirements.
